Alright, this is too much for Celtics fans to process what happened over the last hours. At first, they were talking about a 3 team trade for Porzingis until they nullified it and then, when we thought this possibility was over the Celtics went for a deal they couldn’t say no to – Getting Kristaps Porzingis even if that means trading Marcus Smart to the Wizards and that’s what exactly happened after we waited and Brad had to secure this trade in about an hour or two before the player option deadline at midnight and as we approach the 5-minute mark and then the bomb was dropped when Dan Greenberg tweeted that this is when I really got nervous
Marcus Smart was traded.
Typing this sentence felt and still feels so surreal to me, like taking one of the Celtics’ trio players and trading him as if he was just another player and saying that I’m not a big fan of this trade would be an understatement and just to be fair, I’ll give Brad the benefit of the doubt and see what he’s got in his sleeves, but this is a SHOCKING trade no one could expect, particularly when this happens just a few days after saying how he loved the core and was focused on that.
I don’t know, maybe this was Brad’s sneaky way of saying either Marcus wasn’t part of his core or things can change drastically. The bottom line is Marcus Smart’s run as Celtic cuts off after 9 seasons. Do you know whose fault it is? The Clippers. What assholes. Look what they did just because Malcolm Brogdon’s health isn’t the best.
To be honest, I’m probably going to need a little time to digest all this, so let’s just take a look at what we know as of now.
Marcus Smart is one of the best playmakers and most versatile defenders in the league. No doubt about that as they also lose a guard who was signed for at least 3 more seasons as opposed to Brogdon whom the Celtics are not gonna sign once his contract is up given the fact he will be 32 years old and dragging an injury which raises a lot of concern. Plus, if you’re adding someone in Porzingis who has injury concerns while also employing Robert Williams who has injury concerns, you can understand why this might be an issue.
My only thought is what on earth are they about to flip those two picks for this is not exactly a roster that needs young rookies. They need to win new talent, and now have a point guard need and a pretty big one at that. We just saw what life was like defensively for Brogdon in the playoffs, and that’s an issue. It’s a little weird that a team that wanted to get back to their defensive identity just traded their most versatile defender, so my gut says there has to be more. At least I’m praying there has to be more.
Obviously, there are some out there who are Delighted that Marcus Smart is traded, and I guess now we’ll finally get the answer to the big question of whether or not the Celtics needed to trade Smart to get over the hump and win a title. I must give Brad some credit for having the balls to make a major franchise-altering trade because that is what this is.
Sorry, I still need some more time to process it.
